Skin Rashes & Dry Skin: Understand How It Happens

It’s very important to keep the skin hydrated. If nothing else, consider that dry skin will highlight any wrinkles that you already have, so the use of a moisturizer will immediately help your appearance if your skin is naturally dry. Someone with dry skin will need to apply a moisturizer more than someone with normal or oily skin. Let's take a look at how people get dry skin and rashes and consider some solutions. Chronic dry skin can be treated!

Understanding Rashes & Dryness

Sebaceous glands are responsible for secreting sebum (oil) that sits on the top layer of our skin (the stratum corneum). As we get older, sebum production decreases over time as does natural collagen and elastin levels...leading to dry, thinning skin - as well as flaking, occasional cracking on hands, elbows and around the mouth.
A lack of sebum output will result in dry skin and in many cases lead to skin rashes. Therefore, it is important to make sure that we use a moisturizer to help replenish water content to the skin as well as lock moisture in.

Some everyday factors that might lead to rash and dry skin are:

·Harsh Soaps and Detergents: These will strip the natural oils that body skin needs for natural moisturizing and protection against outside elements. Our Nourish Dry Skin Face Wash addresses this issue by utilizing mild cleansing surfactants that will not strip the natural oils from your skin. We also add natural extracts and proteins to enhance moisturizing properties of the skin.
·The Sun: Any excessive heat will dry out the skin. We know that the sun is the leading cause of aging, introducing free radicals which leads to damaged collagen. Our Nourish line of lotions, body butters and body creams will all contribute to keeping the skin properly moisturized.
·Excessive Bathing/Showering: You should limit the time to take a bath or shower around 15 minutes. Extending lengths will lead to skin drying. Also, you water should be at lukewarm temperatures as hot water will also dry your skin.
·How you wash: Although wash cloths are the standard for washing, it is better to use your hands. Vigorously scrubbing your body will strip the acid mantle (thin layer of oils that protect your skin from contaminants as we as keep your skin moist) from your skin.
· Cold Weather: Colder weather typically brings with it low humidity and wind. Low humidity means less natural moisture in the air and the arid dryness accelerates evaporation of the skin and reduces sebaceous secretions. Windy conditions further help evaporate moisture on our tissue and promotes drying - in severe cases, sometimes to the point of leading to cracking and localized rashes.
