Why Do I Have Itchy Scalp?

If you have an itchy scalp, there are many possible causes. The simplest cause, and the one easiest to remedy, is that your scalp is dry. Dandruff can also cause your scalp to itch. If you have scalp psoriasis then that could also be the problem. It is even possible that you have an allergy to your shampoo, conditioner, or styling product and that is irritating your scalp and causing it to itch. Let's take a look at several causes and what helps an itchy scalp.

Dry Scalp

Just as with dry elbows or any other dry skin patch on your body, a dry scalp will cause it to itch. There are many reasons why your scalp may become overly dry. If you bathe in water that is very hot, it dries out your skin, including your scalp. If you use a harsh, stripping shampoo regularly, it will remove the oil from your scalp and hair, causing your hair to dry out and itch. Heat styling, such as blow-drying, curling, or straightening your hair can also cause your scalp to dry out, making it itch. During the colder months, some types of heating will take the moisture out of the air, which can also contribute to a dry scalp. If you see no lesions, patches, redness, or other symptoms that would signify a larger problem, your scalp may simply be dry.follicleanse for itchy scalp, oily hair and dandruff

If you have patches of dry, flaky skin on your scalp, you may have dandruff, another common cause. There are several conditions that will cause dandruff, including an increase of oil production in the scalp that causes dead skin cells to accumulate into patches. Another cause of dandruff is an increase of malassezia; which is yeast that occurs naturally on the scalp. The malassezia feeds on the oils found on your scalp, and if there is a lot of oil, the amount of malassezia can increase. This causes irritation to your scalp, and it can cause patches that will make your scalp flake off and itch. Dandruff can’t be cured, but the symptoms can be alleviated.

Scalp Psoriasis

If you have patches on your scalp that are raised and inflamed, it may be scalp psoriasis. Mild cases of scalp psoriasis cause minor itching, but severe cases can cause lesions to form along with intense itching and burning. Scratching the lesions can cause infection. The cause of scalp psoriasis has not been determined, but it is believed to be caused by a problem with the immune system. Under the skin of your scalp, skin cells are attacked by the immune system for unknown reasons. As the body fights the skin cells, some die and are replaced by new cells. This causes a buildup of skin cells that can surface on the scalp. White blood cells fighting the skin cells also cause inflammation and irritation. There is no cure for scalp psoriasis, but its symptoms can be treated.

Contact Dermatitis

Shampoos and hair products contain many chemicals. Although most people do not have allergies to those chemicals, some people are more sensitive to certain chemicals. If you have recently switched shampoos or are using a new styling product, you could have an allergy to it. Mild allergic reactions cause mild irritation and itching, but a severe allergy can cause blisters to form on your scalp along with considerable discomfort. If you suspect an allergy may be the source of your itching, discontinue use of the suspected product, and your condition should go away within a few days to several weeks.

For most all of these symptoms and causes it's important to look for the best dry itchy scalp shampoo that addresses excess oil and bacteria as well as dryness. This can include shampoos that contain zinc and/or emu oil.
