Tips for Getting Rid of Tangles

Although all types of hair are subject to developing tangles, this is especially true of curly or wavy strands, and locks that are thicker. While some people see tangled strands as merely an inconvenience, they can actually damage the health of your hair shafts as well. That is because tangled locks undergo more stress, which can lead to damage due to pulling, tearing breaking, or simply pulling the hair out by the root. Damaged follicle shafts are more likely to break, producing split ends or even falling out completely. Instead of risking the damage, take the time each day to detangle strands.

Here are some great tips for getting rid of tangles. Some involve technique, some require use of specialized products as a detangler. Either way, to goal is to reduce the snarls allowing combs or brushes to pass through without snagging.

Brushing Methods

The very first thing you need to keep in mind is the proper way to detangle. The type of brush or comb you use depends on your strand type but wide-toothed combs will work well for all types, even the thickest and curliest. When you brush whether normally or to detangle, you should always do so in small sections and start at the bottom working your way up. This will prevent you from pulling too hard and causing breakage. Tangles occur due to snarling and the tendency of follicle strands to stick together because of friction. While we all like the squeaky, clean feel after shampooing. the friction caused by the cleanliness makes it hard for combs and brushes to pass smoothly.

When to Detangle

The best time of the day to detangle strands depends on your hair type. If possible, you should try to detangle before you go in the shower and use a wide-toothed comb to do so. This will make it easier because you can look in the mirror and you are less likely to cause damage because dry strands are stronger than wet ones. If most of the knots are gone, you will be able to focus your time in the shower on the few that remain. Follow this link for more info and tips for getting rid of tangles.

Use a Detangler or Conditioner

If your hair is prone to tangles, keep a quality detangler on hand. You should try to always use a deep conditioner while in the shower because this will help reduce any tangles by repairing damaged cuticles. If there are still problem areas, either apply the detangler directly or try doing the same thing with conditioner instead. Then slowly separate small groups of strands from the tangle to avoid damaging them. Do this either using your wide-toothed comb or your fingers depending on your preference. After applying a conditioner (following the shampoo), use your fingers for separation - especially during the winter or dry, low-humidity conditions. This gives you a head-start separating strands. We recommend using a wide-toothed comb after the conditioner is applied while still in the shower and before rinse. We generally recommend a conditioner that contains biotin for added strength such as Bioten Biotin Conditioner.

Other Hair Products

No matter what type of hair you have, one of the best ways to manage tangles is to use high quality products. Cheap shampoos are more likely to dry out your hair, leading to tangles. When it comes to brushes, you should follow the same rules as with a comb: go for ones where the bristles are separated. This will damage your hair less than a brush with thick bristles. If it is incredibly tangled, you can always use your fingers instead because this allows you to carefully control the pressure you are exerting on the strands.

Leave-in conditioners are another product you should consider. Assuming you have followed these other tips, your hair should be smooth and separated. Pat dry with a towel, then spray or apply a leave-in. Most leave-ins allow for additional smoothing and separation and generally add styling management and enhanced shine and sheen.

Keep it Moisturized

Dry hair is more prone to tangles and because of this you need to be careful to keep yours moisturized at all times. This means avoiding actions that dry it out such as washing it too often or using hot styling tools. If you have curly hair in particular, try to select a shampoo that moisturizes to help prevent this problem. In addition to using a moisturizing conditioner of creme rinse, also consider using a Keratin conditioner similar to Kepatos. Keratin helps strengthen and helps smooth tangles and frizz.
