Stretch Marks | Causes & Treatments
Who gets stretch marks? What do they look like? How do stretch marks form? Why are some people cursed with them and some are not? Is there anything you can do to prevent stretch marks? Is skin care available to prevent or eliminate stretch marks?
Why are some people cursed with this and some are not? Stretch Marks are normal, especially if you are going through puberty or pregnancy. These are times in your life when your body is undergoing so many changes so fast that the skin can not catch up.
These are just a few of the questions that those who suffer from or know someone who is suffering from stretch marks would ask.
First, let’s go over “What is a Stretch Mark”? A stretch mark is fine lines or marks that occur in areas of the body where the skin has been subjected to continuous stretching. They can be red and purple at first and then over time become white or flesh color. They are lines that occur under the skin which tears from such rapid growth. There are different factors that contribute to the making of these marks
- Pregnancy – abdomen and breast
- Adolescents – growth spurts
- Overweight individuals
If you think about it, it is actually a great thing. Let’s say you are pregnant and as you are aware your stomach grows during pregnancy. WHAT IF YOUR SKIN WOULD NOT STRETCH? What would you do? I am sure it would be painful. The major protein that makes up the connective tissue in your skin is Collagen. It makes up 75% of healthy skin. When your skin is stretched it disturbs the production of Collagen. This results in scaring.
Who gets stretchmarks?
Stretch Marks are not gender specific. Men and Women get them. You will usually see more women with them because of the different changes that there body goes through during puberty and pregnancy. Women will usually find them on their breasts, thighs, hips, and their buttocks.
Stretch marks appear on the body in so many different places for many different reasons when the middle layer of your skin (dermis) is stretched to the point where the elasticity begins to break down. Microscopic bleeding happens as well as tissue inflammation which is what gives you those raised reddish marks or striations.
So now that we have determined what a stretch mark is and what they look like and who gets them let’s talk about stretch mark therapy. Is there a cure? What can one do if they are suffering with stretch marks? There are several options on the market today. Some work and some don’t. Some are costly and expensive.
- Laser Therapy
- Sunless Tanners
- Stretch Mark Cream
- Microderm Abrasion Cream
- Diet and Exercise
When thinking about which one of these avenues you will take it is important to find out what will be best for you. Anyone looking to get rid of their stretch marks should start with making sure you have a nutritious diet, and get lots of exercise. You need to be sure your eating a well balanced diet. It is also important to keep well hydrated. You should be drinking a minimum of eight ounces of water a day.
Now that we have covered health and nutrition lets talk about some of the other options - creams and microderm abrasion treatments. A good stretch marks cream will not just moisturize your skin it will aid in the repair. Using it twice a day it usually takes 2-3 months to see improvements.
It is very important to use a microderm abrasion cream before using your cream. Microderm is known for giving people newer, younger looking skin. Microderm removes the outer layer of dry dead skin cells. When you remove this it encourages new skin growth. What this means is that it can help in aiding in the repair of your stretch marks.
When you go to find a good stretch mark cream there are a few things that you should look for. It would be a great idea to find a cream that has Emu Oil. Emu oil is carrier oil. Use after microderm treatment and before the cream. Emu oil can penetrate through and condition multiple layers of skin.
Emu oil is almost 100% triglyceride lipid. Triglycerides (a type of fatty compound) are abundant in human skin lipids, meaning that the composition of fatty acids in human skin is very similar to that of emu oil. This makes the absorption of emu oil into human skin faster and more effective. Thus if you are using emu oil with your cream or emu oil is in your cream your results will be higher.
Another option is more of a cover-up option. Sunless tanners. Sunless tanners come in sprays and lotions. Since stretch marks are less likely to go away when tanning or using tanning beds, some people opt to use a cover-up method. This will help you out unless you plan on spending a lot of time in the water. Most Spray on and lotions even if they are waterproof tend to come off in the water.
To sum all of this up, some people really suffer from stretch marks and some don’t. Those that do will do almost anything to get rid of them. We have several products that have the qualifications needed to get rid of those unwanted scars.
