Causes and Remedies for Thinning Hair in Women

Hair growth in women is cyclical. The growth phase (Anagen) during which hair grows out of the follicle lasts from about two years to six years. This is followed by a rest phase, which lasts for a varied period of time before it falls out and is replaced by the growth of new follicle shaft. Any interference with the growing and resting phases can hinder the growth and development, causing thinning hair in women.

Causes Of Thinning Hair in Women

There are several factors that can cause a disturbance in the follicle growth cycle leading to subsequent thinning of the hair.

One of the main causes is a common hormonal imbalance known as polycystic ovary syndrome. Autoimmune disorders are another cause of loss and shedding. The difference here is that the loss occurs in patches rather than all over. Stress as well a pregnancy and childbirth can cause sudden and temporary thinning and loss of hair, which is brought on by sudden change in hormones over a short period of time. Lack of iron, or anemia, is also a factor.

Women who go on crash diets also often suffer from thinning hair because the hair does not get the nutrients it needs to thrive.

Effective Remedies to Restore Growth

Since aging and heredity play the most integral role in loss, you can't completely offset it's effects. However, there are a few things you can take to reduce the rate of fall and thinning - especially if you maintain a regimen using products for thinning hair in women.

Get to know your food options and what constitutes a good diet. Taking in sufficient amounts of Zinc and Iron is a very effective way to prevent pre-mature thinning.
  • Avoid washing too often.
  • Avoid ponytails and other hairstyles that involve tying up your style too tightly
  • Avoid frequent hot-iron treatments, perming, straightening, dyeing and bleaching

In addition to all of the above you can volumize thinning hair by employing the right hair grooming tools and practices. Elixirs and shampoos can add volume and give the appearance of thicker hair.

Generally remedies for thinning hair in women require consistent use of a cleanser formulated to promote growth and stop loss, topical application of a follicle stimulant, and maintaining a balanced diet.
