Common Itchy Scalp Treatments

Although there are various causes of itchy scalp, some of the most common reasons are dryness and dandruff. In some cases, the dryness as well as the accompanying itch, will be due to a chronic condition such as seborrhea dermatitis, scalp psoriasis or eczema.

In other cases, it can be due to a condition such as Parkinson’s or even poor dietary habits. There are multiple treatment options and most of them are over the counter remedies.

Shampooing Methodsshampoo treatment for dry, itchy scalp

As mentioned, one of the most common reasons for itchy scalp is dandruff and because of this, the first step in attempting to treat the problem is to modify how a person shampoos.

In many cases, simply using any normal over-the-counter shampoo every day can reduce the itchiness. In some cases, a dandruff shampoo will be necessary but shouldn’t be used too often. After results begin to appear, you should only use dandruff shampoo two or three times a week.

The key to all these cleansers is to get one with paraben-free preservatives and those that have natural ingredients, including Zinc. Shampoos such as Follicleanse are formulated with Fenugreek, Thyme and Sage that help soothe and reduce itching while helping regulate and control oiliness. While many of these type shampoos can be extremely helpful as an effective treatment, too much can be quite literally too much...so, take it easy and build-up to a frequency level that best suits your scalp's condition and sensitivity.

Avoiding Irritants

If the itchy scalp is due to a condition such as scalp psoriasis or eczema, it is crucial to avoid irritants in order to reduce the itchiness. In fact, irritants can be a factor even in situations where these conditions are not present. The first thing to do is avoid any harsh chemicals and this is especially crucial when selecting shampoos or conditioners because many contain irritating ingredients. Dyes are another common culprit as they can have para-phenylenediamine.

These irritants, in addition to irritating the scalp tissue, can also cause swelling and itching of sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are associated with hair follicles and produce sebum that coats and help protect the follicle shaft. The can become swollen and inflamed if clogged or irritated by chemicals or some shampoo/cleanser surfactants. Click here to learn more about the role of sebaceous glands.

Essential and Non-Essential Oils

In cases where the above methods don’t sufficiently reduce itchiness, essential oils (as well as some non-essential ones) can help address some of the causes. Tea tree oil is an excellent option because it has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties. Simply add a few drops to vegetable oil and use it to massage the scalp.

Another option is coconut oil which works by creating a barrier that moisturizes the skin, thereby eliminating dryness. You can use this directly on the clean scalp by rubbing it in and letting it sit for a half an hour before washing it out.

Jojoba oil is another moisturizing option and it works effectively because it has a molecular structure that is very close to natural sebum. Massage a bit of this oil onto the head at night and wash it out in the morning. jojoba Oil is pretty well known for "irrigating" pores and for cleansing toxins and debris. Likewise, Emu Oil is also helpful in that it contains natural antifungal properties and is commonly used to treat inflammation ans scalp tissue problems.

Other Natural Treatments

If the itchy scalp is due to treatments such as blow drying daily or using dyes, then witch hazel is an excellent natural option. It is a natural astringent and it is this characteristic that can help alleviate itching.

A surprising treatment is to make a home hair mask using two bananas and a ripe avocado. By applying it to the scalp and strands for a half hour before rinsing, you can get relief and moisturize your shafts at the same time.

The combination works by moisturizing and nourishing the shaft, which in turn reduces inflammation and dandruff. A final excellent natural treatment is aloe vera which also works due to its moisturizing properties. Simply apply aloe vera gel on the scalp and leave it in for 10 or 15 minutes before washing it out. Follow this link for products for itchy scalp.

Besides these common and in some cases "home treatments" shampoos that work well or zinc-based (Follicleanse), emu oil shampoos and those such as Healthy Hair Plus' Antifungal shampoo.
