What Causes Dandruff?

Pityriasis simplex or dandruff is the name given to the skin cells that are dead on your scalp. The reasons why someone may develop the problem of dandruff are many; so the question “what causes dandruff” is not as simple as it may seem. There are some conditions in the environment that will actually lead to a person developing dandruff and that is the extremes of the weather. The dry cold often carries over to our skin and scalp; drying it out as well. This will lead to an excess of flaking and therefore dandruff. It can also be caused by seborrheic dermatitis. This condition is often noted by red skin and scaly yellow flaking along with the white dandruff. It can occur on the scalp as well as the eyebrows, chest bone, groin and nose of a person.

Not Necessarily A Hygiene Problem

Most people you ask associate causes of dandruff with poor hygiene; although it is true that hygiene is one of the things that will cause a person to show signs of dandruff it is not the only thing. Some people can shower twice a day, wash their hair properly; and still develop the condition. A person with an irritated scalp can show dandruff symptoms directly after showering and sometimes it gets so bad they will even show it on the eyebrows. Other locations where dry skin will affect a person’s propensity to get dandruff are the back of the ears, the nose, armpits etc. Dry skin is another reason for the condition and that will tend to happen in the winter.

Other Reasons

When a person has a dirty scalp they will also begin to notice flakes. Many people think they should wash their hair and forget the scalp. The scalp is the area that needs attention; proper massaging and cleansing will keep the follicles working well. There are also conditions like Malassezia which is a fungus that also gets people to have problems in the scalp. Eczema and Psoriasis are also conditions that will lead to dandruff-like symptoms. If those conditions are anywhere in the body then the chances then you need to research and look for the best dandruff shampoo. Finally, you will also find that contact dermatitis will lead to flakes as well. Contact dermatitis happens in people with sensitive scalps and who use hair products that irritates their skin.

The Solution For What Causes Dandruff

There are many treatments for dandruff, if you already know what causes dandruff in your specific case then you will be more likely to be able to solve it quickly. There are dandruff shampoo that are sold over the counter as well as creams and oils that will help heal the scalp. If these over the counter solutions are not working for you then it may be time to make an appointment with a doctor or a dermatologist. It may be that the treatment that you got from the shampoos or the creams, are not strong enough to control your case. When you don’t get relief from an over the counter method you should consult your family doctor.
