The Best Dry Scalp Treatment
Dryness of the scalp, flaking and itching is a common problem that affects many people. There are many different causes for dry scalp, some of which can be prevented and others that aren’t easily preventable due to environmental or hereditary factors.
One cause is a decrease in the production of certain hormones, such as estrogen, that occurs as the body ages. The decrease in estrogen affects the amount of oils produced naturally by the skin and hair follicles.
Another factor that can cause dry scalp is the use of hot water when bathing and using shampoos containing harsh, oil-stripping chemicals. Winter weather brings low humidity to the air, which can also affect hydration of tissue. Whatever the cause of the dryness, an oil massage rubbed into the scalp will loosen and remove dead skin cells and provide moisture, as well as protecting the scalp from further drying.
Emu Oil
One of the best ways to treat your dry scalp is with oils that contain fatty acids such as that found in Emu oil. Omega fatty
acids 3, 6 & 9 all provide major health benefits. Ingesting these fatty acids can improve health by decreasing inflammation and increasing circulation among other benefits. Omega 3 in particular is very important for improving the elasticity and sheen of hair. It does this by nourishing and re-hydrating starting at the scalp. In addition it can strengthen hair and help to reduce and even reverse hair loss. Emu oil is a rich source of several fatty acids including Omega 3, 6 and 9.
It has an abundant amount of vitamin A and E which are critical to moisturizing and rejuvenating your scalp and hair. You will also find Oleic acid which helps to stimulate the skin’s natural properties that produce important bacteria to hydrate hair. Though you won’t find this in the average person’s diet you’ll find it in Emu oil. Many oils can provide problems such as clogging your pores; Emu oil does not do this, but will instead help with adding moisture and elasticity to hair making it an excellent dry scalp treatment. It also is easily absorbed into the skin which makes its properties even more beneficial.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is extracted from the meat and kernels of mature coconuts. It has many uses, one of which is oil for an itchy scalp treatment. Coconut oil is a good moisturizer and can be massaged into the scalp monthly, or more often as needed. Once the oil has been on the scalp for up to 30 minutes, wash hair with a mild shampoo, or leave it in if desired. Not only does it moisturize the scalp, but it is also believed to help restore proteins to hair follicles, reducing damage.
Jojoba Oil
One of the best scalp oils for treating dry scalp is jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is extracted from the seeds of the Jojoba tree, found in desert regions of the southwestern United States and parts of Mexico. This oil closely resembles the oil naturally produced by human skin. Jojoba oil is an effective treatment for dry scalp because it does not evaporate, unlike many other moisturizers. It is commonly used as an additive for for hair strengthening and cleansing. To use jojoba oil on dry scalp, apply the oil to the scalp and gently rub it in. After leaving on for up to 30 minutes, use a mild shampoo to wash it out. Your scalp will be moisturized, and the moisture will be retained for weeks.
