How Antibacterial Mouthwash Helps Bacterial Scalp Infections

Scalp infections as a result of bacteria or fungi are common conditions. They can cause the scalp to become itchy and inflamed. If not treated, the infection can spread.

One of the effects of some scalp infections is hair loss. If the hair follicles are infected, the hairs in the follicle will likely fall out. Until the infection is cleared, the follicle will not produce a hair. Most mouthwashes are made with ingredients that fight bacteria. The product is used after brushing to kill bacteria that can cause plaque to form on teeth. Because it has antibacterial properties, mouthwash can also be used to fight bacteria and fungi on the scalp.

Ringwormantifungal shampoo and conditioner for ringworm, folliculitis, or dermatitis

Despite what the name implies, this common scalp infection is caused by fungus. It can occur on the skin anywhere on your body, but when it is on the scalp, it is called tinea capitis.

This fungal infection produces rings of inflamed skin that can become scaly. It can also affect the hair follicles, damaging them and causing the hair in the follicle to fall out or break off. As long as the fungus is on the follicle, new hair is unlikely to grow. Because of the antibacterial properties of mouthwash, the application of the liquid and shampoo for fungal infection to areas affected by ringworm can kill the fungus. Rather than rinsing your whole head in mouthwash, use a cotton swab or cloth to apply it directly to the affected areas to kill the fungus and prevent it from spreading.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Another common scalp infection that can be treated using antibacterial mouthwash is seborrheic dermatitis.

This condition is caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the scalp. Although the yeast, called malassezia, occurs naturally, an overgrowth causes the skin to become inflamed and itchy. The malassezia feeds on sebum, the oil that is produced in hair follicles. Because the inflammation can cause hair follicles to stop producing hair, temporary hair loss can occur with this condition.

To reduce the overproduction of the yeast, mouthwash can be used on the scalp. The liquid helps to reduce the amount of the fungus on the skin so that the areas affected can heal. Apply the mouthwash to the affected areas using a cotton pad or cloth. This is most effective if you also use a shampoo designed to reduce the amount of oil on the scalp that encourages the malassezia to overgrow and spread.

Folliculitis is another scalp disorder that can be treated with antibacterial mouthwash. Folliculitis can result from various types of bacteria, and it causes inflammation and itching on and around hair follicles. It can also cause bumps to form on the follicles. If the bumps become infected, then they can fill with pus; the bumps can seep the pus, causing crusty areas of infection on the scalp.

A mouthwash that contains anti-bacterial ingredients can help to eliminate the bacteria that are the cause of the condition. In addition, it helps to protect the affected areas of the skin that may be broken from becoming infected. The mouthwash should be applied only to the areas that are affected by the bacteria.
