Using Hair Oil For Dry Hair

The constant use of blow dryers, hot rollers, curling irons and chemical treatments can strip your scalp of its natural oil. To replace these oils, deep conditioning oil treatments can be used. Quite a few of the available beauty products in supply stores make claims to quickly grow hair longer and healthier. The majority of the time, the variety of hair products offered commercially is pricey and they don’t deliver on their claims or give the promised results. The products are also full of chemicals that are not good for the health of your scalp and hair.

Yet, women search among products in the hope they will find what works best for their hair. Instead of experimenting with chemically enhanced hair products, looking into natural oils that can help you enhance the growth of dry hair may be a better option. It can be difficult to change your hair from dry and brittle but with the selection of the right oil you can speed it up. Using hair oils for dry hair can really boost moisture and hydration. Many (below) can improve shine, reduce drying times (read less damage), and detangle.

Emu Oil

Of all the oils we have used (and recommend) Emu Oil stands-out as the winner. It is great for moisture without greasiness, it is rich in Omega 3's (excellent for strengthening and overall scalp health), and it penetrates better than others. While relatively unknown in the United States and Canada, it is widely used in Australia and New Zealand where it has been used for years as a hair and skin additive.

It has unusual properties - it penetrates scalp, skin and follicles deeply and is excellent for relieving itching, dryness, flakes and restoring balanced moisture. It can be used alone, mixed-in with your favorite shampoo or conditioner, and works very well as a hot oil treatment or dry hair treatment if you experience hair breakage or damage.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is the ideal oil to use for scalp massages as it increases blood flow and reverses brittle, dry hair. Olive oil is known to increase the growth of hair in areas that have experienced thinning and baldness and is used as a leave in conditioner. You can choose whether to apply the oil weekly or monthly but what you will find is that hair will regain shine and a healthy appearance. Apply the olive oil to the tips and roots of the hair. It will act as a moisturizer and reduce the amount of frizz, tame your split ends and add shine to your hair.

Jojoba Oil

Next to emu oil, this is probably our favorite. It is a natural hair oil that is derived from a shrub indigenous to the western United States. It has properties and benefits similar to the natural oils in our hair and scalp. It is an excellent moisturizer, is good for adding shine to hair that has dulled from chemical treatments, and works well for naturally enhancing the cleaning power of shampoos. It dislodges dirt, grime and product build-up and greatly improves softness and smooths roughness.

It can be used alone, as a hot oil treatment or worked into shampoo and conditioner while showering. Most think it is effective when used in the shampoo to improve cleansing - especially if using a mild or sulfate free shampoo.

Coconut Oil

One of the most effective treatments not only for dry hair but for any type of hair issue is using coconut oil. Many say coconut oil performs better than any man-made treatment found for sale because it is completely natural and is silicone-free and free of alcohols and other chemicals. It is an incredible treatment for repairing damaged hair that has been over processed, damage caused by heat or natural dryness. Coconut oil is also an anti-fungal and can be used as a preventative measure for dandruff. It can be used as part of your regular hair care routine and can be used as a leave in conditioner on textured hair. Coconut oil can be used as a pre shampoo conditioning treatment to add extra moisture to dry hair. Apply a generous amount of coconut oil all over the hair and follow up by covering with a processing cap and leave the oil on between 30 minutes to an hour before shampooing.

Argan Oil

Argan Oil has made quite a resurgence in the past few years becoming a hair oil of choice among most. Its unique properties allow drying time to be significantly reduced, adds incredible shine, and provides healing moisture for dry hair. It is naturally derived from plants indigenous to Morocco and has become widely used under several brands such as Nourish, Agadir and Moroccan Oil.

What we like most about Argan Oil is it does a masterful job smoothing, softening and increasing shine. It's good a detangling and works great applied while hair is still yet - it aids combing and reducing tangles; and is great for healing and repairing dry hair. We recommend using a light application with both hands over the top of wet or damp hair before combining with a wide-toothed comb and using a blow dryer or flat iron. You will notice a significant difference in shine immediately. Since it improves drying time, damage and breakage will be reduced. For severe damage, it can be used as a hot hair oil treatment.

Castor Oil

Castor oil is a good moisturizer for dry hair. Applying castor oil to the ends of your hair reverses dry hair and improves split ends. If the hair is extremely damaged, castor oil acts as a good moisturizer when small amounts are applied to all over the hair. In addition, if you experience thinning and breakage on hairlines then using castor oil can help to strengthen hair here.
