What Causes Sore Spots on the Scalp

Sore spots on the scalp can be caused by a number of factors. More often than not, inexpensive shampoos or conditioners lead to inflammation, irritate the scalp or fail to adequately cleanse follicle pores. Products that use Sodium Laurel Sulfate have been shown to inflame tender scalp tissue and damage the follicle shaft and cuticle.

Sodium Laurel Sulfate is a surfactant - the ingredient used by manufactures to create the foaming bubbles that lift and wash away dirt and oil. Many manufacturers have switched to a milder Sodium Laureth Sulfate that has proven more effective at cleansing, yet is gentler on the scalp.

Sore spots on the scalp can also be caused by physiological scalp problems such as dermatitis (seborrheic dermatitis), aka seborrhea dermatitis, scalp psoriasis and scalp acne. These scalp conditions are generally the result of several factors.

"I spent several months away from home using hotel shampoos and developed several small, flaky sores on my head. When I got back home I began using my Emu Shampoo (which I have been using for a couple of years). The sores on my scalp cleared up in a week and my hair is looking great. Wanted to let you know!" Blake - Alpharetta, GA

Dermatitis causes flaking, scales and sores on the scalp and is considered a result of excessive hair oil production known as sebum. Sebum is excreted by the sebaceous glands associated with all follicle pores. Sebum, in normal quantities, helps lubricate and nourish your hair. Excessive sebum can accumulate trapping dirt and lead to bacteria when acting upon yeast. Bacteria and oil causes stickiness and can produce sores, bumps and pimples.

Scalp acne and psoriasis in turn are often the result of adequate cleansing or lack of proper care of the scalp. The scalp, as our skin, requires circulation and nutrients for optimum health and follicle regeneration. Failure to cleanse can cause clogged pores and develop into psoriasis or scalp pimples. More of an issue of cleansing and moisturizing, sores can can result from inadequate care.

To address sore spots on the scalp, we recommend two hair products to help treat the problem. One, Follicleanse Shampoo. Follicleanse (shown to the right) is our best clarifying shampoo. It is formulated with Zinc PCA and botanical extracts that clean oil and dirt from pores.

  • Follicleanse is effective at regulating oil production and makes an excellent shampoo for dandruff, oil hair, dermatitis and scalp psoriasis. It contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate, so it is gentle and soothing on the scalp and has been shown to be very effective at helping to heal sore spots on the scalp.
  • The second product we recommend is Emu Oil Shampoo and Conditioner (below and left). Emu Shampoo has become increasing popular in the past ten years and has become the "favorite" of many of our customers. Emu Oil is transdermal and penetrates deep into the scalp.

Emu Oil is a natural moisturizer and has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, making it an excellent shampoo to add moisture to dry hair and dry scalp as well as heal and treat sores.

Emu Oil has been clinically tested and shown to heal many scalp conditions. It is a common ingredient in skin care in that it helps heal burns, cuts, lacerations and is super effective at treating scars and skin rash. Its use in hair products has increased body and fullness to dry and thin hair and it delivers superior nutrients to improve scalp health.

Depending on the source or causes of sore spots on the scalp we recommend alternating Follilceanse, Antifungal Shampoo and Emu Oil Shampoo as part of your hair regimen. These products have been shown effective to treat scalp sores as well as help heal dermatitis, scalp psoriasis and scalp acne.

Both of these specially formulated hair products deep clean while infusing moisture, nutrients and help soothe dry, itchy or flaking scalp.
