Antioxidants: Benefits of Antioxidants

What are Antioxidants?

The latest buzzword in the cosmetic and skin care industry is antioxidant skin care products. Antioxidants essentially inhibit oxidation and prevent free radical damage. In other words, antioxidants combat free radicals which have a propensity to cause kin damage.

Both intake and application of antioxidants can therefore shield the skin from these free radicals which act as scavengers and can rob the skin of its natural collagen and elastin synthesis. There are various antioxidants available out there each with a specific potency; but efficacious nonetheless. Let's look at the benefits of antioxidants.

Grape Seed Extract & Soy

Grape seed essentially contains proanthocyanidins which act as free-radical scavengers and can prevent significant damage to the skin cells. When applied as a topical treatment, it has proven to aid in wound healing.

Studies also reveal that grape seed extract prevents as well as reduces the breakdown of collagen as well as minimizes blotchy skin that is caused by sun exposure. Incorporating products that contain grape seed extract can therefore prevent photo-aging and can also destroy free radicals.

Soy extract has the ability to promote collagen synthesis and an overall improvement of skin health. Intake of soy therefore may be beneficial for maintaining skin health. Topical application of soy however may not be as effective in erasing lines, wrinkles or fading pigmentation.
