What Essential Oils Are Good For Hair

Essential oils are beneficial for the hair in many ways. They are typically added in small amounts to a carrier oil, such as grapeseed, olive, or jojoba and then applied to the hair. These soothing combinations can help alleviate the symptoms of dandruff and scalp psoriasis and improve overall scalp health. They also do wonderful things for your hair, including reducing oiliness, as odd as it may seem, sealing in moisture and protecting your tresses from damage. Consider the following to try:

Lavender

Lavender essential oil provides an overall boost for your tresses and scalp. It helps to seal in moisture, protecting your tresses from the elements and heat styling. When rubbed into the scalp, it increases blood flow, which can stimulate growth. It is also beneficial for conditions of the scalp that can cause excessive shedding or scalp itch. A very soothing product, it also promotes relaxation, and stress is not good for any part of the body, including your locks. Lavender can also be used full strength rather than being mixed with a carrier.

Tea Tree

Tea Tree essential oil is good for scalp conditions that can cause hair loss. It has natural antibacterial properties, so it can help with certain types of dandruff that are caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the scalp. It also promotes blood circulation when rubbed into the scalp, which is beneficial for growth and overall scalp health. In addition, it can help to seal in moisture and prevent damage that occurs from using heated styling products. Tea tree should be used with a carrier to dilute it.

Cedarwood

Cedarwood essential oil is very soothing, similar to lavender. It also has natural antibacterial properties, making it beneficial for scalp conditions like dandruff or psoriasis. It can be used to loosen plaques caused by scalp psoriasis, and the antibacterial properties help to prevent infection in the plaques. When rubbed into the scalp, cedarwood can promote the growth of your tresses because it stimulates blood flow to the head, which in turn stimulates follicles. Cedarwood can also help replace the natural oils in the hair and on the scalp, which prevents stands from becoming dry and brittle. Dilution with a carrier is most useful when using cedarwood.

Rosemary

Rosemary is quite versatile, as it can be used alone, with a carrier, or with a combination of other essential oils. In addition to providing extra moisturizing and softening qualities to your locks, it is also good for common scalp disorders like dandruff and psoriasis. It has also been reportedly used in combination with thyme, lavender, and cedarwood to promote growth in sufferers of alopecia, which is a form of hair loss due to unknown causes. Rubbing it into the scalp promotes blood flow to the scalp, which is beneficial in promoting healthy follicles and stimulating growth.

Sage

Sage essential oil also provides numerous benefits to your tresses and scalp health. It can be used to help balance the ph levels of the scalp; a disruption to the ph is responsible for certain types of scalp conditions, including some forms of dandruff. In addition, it can be used to cleanse the scalp, and it promotes growth. It also helps to prevent drying out of your tresses from the elements and heat styling.

Mints

Generally the mints fall under the derivative of the menthols. No doubt many of us are familiar with the invigorating and awakening aroma of the mint family of essential oils - spearmint, peppermint, winter green, etc. Besides being extremely aromatic, they pack quite a tingle to the skin. If you have ever tried a mint shampoo you know what I mean. Mints and menthol have fundamentaL medicinal properties. They can help heal rashes, inflammation, fight-off infection and bacteria, and are known to help regulate sebacious glands - reducing oily hair and scalp.

Like all essential oils for hair, many are concentrated and exceedingly strong used by themselves. Most are combined in formulations used in shampoos and conditioners; some, like Tea Tree oil can be used with droppers for limited use in their concentrated form. Typically, the best techniques for for adding essential oils that are good for hair is to use a plastic container, add a small amount of your favorite shampoo or conditioner, then add a few drops of the essential oil.
