How To Treat Dry Hair: General Guidelines
Dry hair can be a big problem for many women, especially during the warm summer months and cool winter months as both of these seasons have a tendency to suck the moisture right out, leaving it dry and brittle. Even worse, dry hair is more prone to flyaways and excessive breakage. If you are able to treat your dry locks, it will not only look better, but it will be healthier as well. Here are some ways you can accomplish this goal.
Don’t Overuse Shampoo
Most people think that your hair is healthiest when it is very clean and this can lead them to wash it every day or in some cases even a few times a day. However, this is not the best idea, especially if you have dry tresses. That is because most shampoos have harsh cleaning agents which remove natural oils that actually hold in moisture. Try to find a gentle shampoo and wash yours at least once every three days.
Avoid The Sun
While the sun feels great on your skin, everyone knows it can be harmful in the long run. The same thing is true for your hair. If you are going to be out in the sun for over thirty minutes, it is a good idea to try to give your hair some protection by using an umbrella or wearing a hat or scarf. That is because direct sunlight can actually dry it out even more.
Use Plenty Of Conditioner
If your hair is dry, one of the best treatments is to be sure to always use conditioner. Try to opt for one that has no alcohol, or very low quantities of it. If you don’t want to take the time to read the ingredients, try opting for shampoos without fragrance as these are less likely to contain alcohol. For especially dry hair, using an overnight conditioner may be necessary to help provide the needed moisture. You might also consider a Keratin treatment. Keratin is especially good for taming frizz, breaking and damage. As a result, a keratin treatment can be good for hair growth
as well as improving shine if excessive dryness has left your style dull or dingy looking.
Careful With Brushing
You have probably heard your whole life that brushing your hair frequently will make it shiny and beautiful but if you have dry tresses, this is actually one of the worst things you can do. That is because brushing can fracture your hair and even make it fall out. If it is wet, comb it instead of brushing (and be careful while doing so) and when you do brush, be sure to do so gently. Opt for vent hairbrushes
or those with boar, long and wide bristles as these will pull the hair less. Use wide-toothed combs with a leave-in conditioner to reduce snags, tangles and snapping. The leave-in conditioner will also help add and retain moisture during the day.
All types of styling devices that rely on the heat to function will only make your locks drier. This includes blow dryers, straighteners, curling irons, hot rollers and hot combs. Hot combs and hot rollers will both stretch out your hair at the same time that the heat shrinks it, creating a great deal of tension which will remove the moisture. If you can’t live without your blow dryer, be sure to always use it on the lowest setting with a diffuser and never stretch or pull your hair while using it.
