Scalp Conditioner for Afro Hair

The main problem that African Americans have with their hair is it can be very dry, oily and it can break easily. On average washing your hair once every 10 days can help cleanse the hair and scalp, if you over wash your hair it can become more dry and itchy. We now recommend washing African American hair daily to help control dryness issues.

The correct way of doing this is to find a good conditioner to help keep your hair from drying out. If you must use heat tools, try to use them as little as possible and stay away from perms and color all together. They can dry hair out worse. Also hair grease is a no no. It is made with mineral oils which contain alcohol and dry your scalp out very badly.

Try to use a deep conditioning treatment at least every 7 days. Also try to stick to products that are naturally based, these will be more gentle on your scalp. Use a daily leave in conditioner during the winter months for an extra boost. Some different oils you can use on your hair are:

  • Argan
  • Emu
  • Jojoba

Try to use a clarifying shampoo every other week to help remove product and oil build up. These tips will work with any hair types and will benefit afro styles the most. Doing this will keep your hair and scalp healthier for longer. Essentials oils can also help but do your research to make sure you find ones that will work for you. Some essential oils can be harsh or strong.

Also stay away from products that clog your pores, if your scalp pores get clogged your hair will not grow properly and start to thin. Again stay away from all hair grease! Remember your hair is not living breathing thing so to make it healthier you have to start on the inside. If you can find a sulfate free shampoo as well, it is deeply moisturizing and gentle on your scalp.
