Effectiveness Of Saw Palmetto Hair Loss Treatment
Hair loss is a very distressing condition for most people to experience, and there are numerous causes of hair loss. Some causes are treatable, meaning that hair loss is only temporary. Once the condition clears, the hair begins to grow normally again. Stress can also cause temporary hair loss, as can certain medications. However, there are several causes of hair loss that are considered to be more permanent.
There are certain treatments available that work for some people. Male pattern baldness is one cause of hair loss that has only a few treatments available; one of those treatments is saw palmetto.
Male Pattern Baldness
Male pattern baldness is largely responsible for hair loss in men under 70 years old.
Until the discovery of two chemical treatments, Minoxidil and Finasteride, there was nothing to be done to slow down or prevent hair loss due to male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness is believed to be a result of the hormone testosterone that undergoes a natural chemical process that turns it into dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone bonds with a receptor in hair follicles that causes the follicle to produce weaker or shorter hairs, and shrinks the follicle itself, which eventually causes the follicle to stop producing hair at all. Once hair follicles stop producing hair, bald spots are the result. Both Minoxidil and Finasteride interfere with the process that testosterone undergoes to change it to dihyrotestosterone. While not all production of dihydrotestosterone is stopped, treatment with Minoxidil and Finasteride will significantly lower the levels of the hormone in the scalp. Saw Palmetto as a DHT inhibitor is believed to work the same way to treat hair loss.
A saw palmetto is a small palm tree that grows from about three to six feet high. Its leaves are edible, and the fruit of the tree has been used by many cultures for medicinal purposes. Its most common uses are for prostate health.
The extract of the saw palmetto berry is what is used to make the hair loss treatment. The extract counters the production of dihydrotestosterone, effectively slowing down or stopping hair loss, making saw palmetto an excellent and generally effective ingredient for hair loss vitamins
. Not only has it been shown effective for aiding with enlarged prostates it’s also been shown to aid with male pattern baldness. The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine
showcased a study where 60 % of participants on saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol did show increased hair growth over those taking the placebo.
Using Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto is available in several forms, so you can ingest it orally or rub it on to your scalp.
It typically takes a number of months before results are noticeable, so you must be patient and wait for it to work. As with the other medications that work by reducing the levels of dihydrotestosterone on the scalp, once you stop using saw palmetto as a treatment, the production of the hormone will proceed. This means that once the hairs in affected follicles fall out, no new hair will grow. Also as with Minoxidil and Finasteride, saw palmetto is not effective for hair loss in every person that uses it. Many people will experience some new hair growth or will notice a reduction in thinning of the hair. However, some people will experience no significant changes to their hair loss or thinning with use of saw palmetto.
