What Can Winter Do To Your Hair?

Winter brings thoughts of snow, hot chocolate, warm fires, and dry hair. Although no one likes to admit it, your hair during the winter suffers as much as your skin from the cold and dry air. Take a look at some easy solutions - including being a bit cautious with styling and choosing the right conditioner and hair shampoo.

Avoid Overexposure To The Elements

Hats make excellent fashion accessories and at the same time keep your hair from being ravaged by the cold winter winds. Too much cold dry air only increases the lack of moisture in your hair, leaving your tresses looking brittle and dry.

Blow Dryers Hibernate

Putting your blow dryer into hibernation during the winter months is the best advice.  They only intensify the harsh affects from the cold, by robbing your hair of additional moisture. Try using the lowest setting following towel drying if you absolutely cannot go without the use of a blow dryer.

Color Jobs And Perms

The frigid winter winds put a negative spin on any color job or perm acquired in this season. As a rule of thumb, try to remember that with already dry hair, color and perm is something for the warmer seasons. Because the use of harsh chemicals has a tendency to dry out your hair, using them in the wrong season can compound the drying effects to give you hair that looks dull and lifeless.

Opting For Hot Oil Treatments

Giving your hair and scalp a hot oil treatment at least once a week (more or less depending on the dryness of your hair) is an excellent way of battling the dryness and keeping your locks soft and healthy. Try wrapping a towel dipped in hot water and wrung out, around your head and hair. The warmth opens your pores and follicles, enhancing the softening qualities of the oil treatment for your hair.

Conditioning

Possibly the best way of treating dry hair in the winter months is by investing in an excellent, moisture rich conditioner for your hair. A heavy conditioning pack left in your hair for thirty minutes or more should be applied at least every other week. Remember to indulge in conditioner following each shampoo. This is the easy way of keeping the moisture in your hair.

Choosing the right Hair Shampoo

As air cools it compresses and is able to hold less moisture. It is common for humidity levels to drop significantly as temperatures and dew points drop. This poses a challenge to our hair and choosing the right hair shampoo can mean the difference in frizziness and fly away hair, or smooth, silky and manageable locks.

As atmospheric moisture levels drop consider switching to or increasing the use of a hair shampoo that infuses moisture.  Products that contain Emu Oil, Panthenol, Jojoba Oil and Shea Butter to work best.  Emu Oil, especially, we have found to proved the best balance of moisture and control without weighing down or flattening.

Enjoying the winter months should not be overwhelmed with obsession over your hair.  Invest in some excellent moisture enhancing hair care products during the winter season to ensure the healthiest hair year round.
