What Causes Scalp Psoriasis?

Scalp psoriasis can be recognized by the presence of scaly patches on the scalp that can be reddish or white in color and what causes scalp psoriasisthat are raised up. There can be more than one spot on the scalp and it can be found elsewhere. In a lot of situations you will see that the patches have indeed spread to the forehead, the neck and on other patients they are visible behind the ears. Many people are afraid they can catch it from another and the truth is that it is not contagious. Like many skin conditions, what causes scalp psoriasis is closely tied into the immune system.

The Immune System

The most popular answer from doctors and people who have studied psoriasis is that it may be related to trouble with the immune system. When you have a weakened immune system then your skin cells can go into overdrive and keep building until you see the patches that are all too known to people with psoriasis. When the immune system is down T cells are put into action causing a higher turnover of skin cells. In some people and there seems to be a genetic like, this turn over becomes evident in flaking, itchiness, scabbing, redness and tender areas.

Equally, allergic reactions to certain chemicals and the environment can "trigger" outbreaks.  Hairspray, gels, styling aids and many shampoos and conditioners contribute to the problem.

Can Scalp Psoriasis Be Hereditary?

A personís genetic composition has been often cited as to effecting whether you will have scalp psoriasis or not. This is thought to be linked by the DNA making up the immune system and the way it functions. Since immune systems and the disease are so closely linked, it stands to reason; people who have had the condition in their family history are a lot more likely to develop it themselves.

Symptoms

Main symptoms include raised reddish patches as well as scaly patches. Fine scaling is common. Those with moderate symptoms include the reddish plaques, flaking that is similar to dandruff, silvery-white scales, a dry scalp, itching and burning sensations and soreness. Some people also experience temporary hair loss but this is not due to the scalp psoriasis itself but rather the combination of harsh treatments, stress, scratching and forcefully removing the scales.

Triggers To The Condition

There are some instances that patients have noted what triggers their scalp psoriasis to act up. These are stress, poor diet, infections, weather and some medications. If you have it in other places on your body then thereís a good chance your scalp will show signs next. Though it may be true that youíre predisposed if you have it elsewhere on your body, it is not something you can spread or catch and can often be treated with a psoriasis shampoo. Quite often people donít want to get to close or touch someone with psoriasis because they fear getting it, this is not a worry.

Two of the most common triggers are an infection (like thrush or strep throat) or some sort of injury on the skin (like a scrape, sever sunburn or bug bite). In addition, stress, smoking and heavy consumption of alcohol can trigger the condition. Cold weather has also been determined as a potential trigger as well as certain medications. The good news is that because scalp psoriasis is so common, there is a great deal of treatment options such as HealthyHairPlusģ' Psoriasis Shampoo available to help you deal with the condition.

When To Seek Treatment

For some people increased care may be sufficient to keeping the scalp psoriasis from becoming too uncomfortaproducts for scalp psoriasis belowble or acting up. For a small problem, using a coal or salicylic acid topical ointment, or a scalp oil for psoriasis can go a long way to easing the problem.

Psoriasis shampoos work very well and can act to inhibit triggers. These are found at the pharmacy or online. Using Jojoba Oil oil for psoriasis is considered one of the most effective and easiest remedies when used with zinc-based and/or sulfate-free shampoos.

If these donít produce a good response or if the problem keeps reoccurring seeking a physicianís advice is the next step. A doctor can make new shampoos and medications available to you in order to help ease the problem. You do want to keep in mind what causes scalp psoriasis can also lead to hair loss. It is important if you struggle with what causes scalp psoriasis and you have immune system problems that you follow a healthy diet and take good care of your general health. Keeping stress low and a nutritious diet will go far in keeping you healthy.

Risk Factors

In addition to an abnormality in the immune system which causes an excess of skin cells, there are several factors which are believed to increase the risk of developing scalp psoriasis. One of the most significant of the risk factors is family history. Some estimates have stated that 40% of those who suffer from psoriasis have at least one family member who does as well. Those with unhealthy immune systems are also at a higher risk of developing psoriasis as well as people who are under a great deal of stress. Obesity and smoking can also increase the chances of developing scalp psoriasis
