Tips and Advice for Today's Top Hair Styles

Today's hair styles are as demanding as they are diverse.  Maintaining healthy hair is challenging given the broad range of styling products and appliances (flat irons, curling irons, etc.) that are being used on a daily basis worlwide.  Here are some tips and advice for maintaining healthy hair styles while getting the look, feel, and manageability you want!
Long Hair Styles

Long hair can be demanding. Styles range from curly, wavy, to silk, long and straight.  The most common problem we encounter with our customers is frizzy hair and breakage.  Long hair is exposed to sun damage, repeated styling, heat generated appliances, and product build-up.  Frizzing can occur over time because longer strands age and are depleted of nutrients and minerals - especially if chemical treatments are applied on a regular basis.

Our recommendation is to apply moisturizing conditioners regularly that contain nutrients and minerals that infuse hydration and maintain amino acid bonds externally.  Emu Conditioner is rich in vitamins and carries moisture deep into the the follicle shaft, relying less on nutrients carried through the shaft, bulb or root.  This improves follicle strength, reducing breakage, while taming split ends and repairing over-styled hair or locks that have been exposed to the elements.  Avoiding repeated use of clarifying shampoos is recommended.  Gentle surfactant shampoos do the trick with unless you heavily use pomades, gels or sprays - which are generally not recommended for longer cuts.

A couple of styling tips:
  • If using a flat iron or curling iron, ensure you have adequately dried your hair.  Evene with today's tourmaline and ionic dryers, wet hair can get "fried" by hot appliances quickly damaging hair leaving it course and brittle and prone to breakage.
  • Though it can be quite a chore, drying should be done on the lowest setting necessary to get the desired result. Heat damages hair and depletes nutrients and can destroy amino acid bonds which give life and body.
  • Avoid putting your hair up until fully dried and make sure you gently comb-out knotting with a large toothed comb. Leaving long hair in a wet bundle can attract dirt and bacteria.

Short Hair Styles

Though often adored for ease of preparation and sassy appeal, short hair cuts and styles have their own set of challenges...primarily styling.  The most common problem we hear from our customers is the ability to adequately style or when using conditioners, the heaviness of most conditioners leave hair flat and lifeless.  Using a light weight conditioner and a moisturizing shampoo is a good combination to leave your hair hydrated yet full of body.

Short hair cuts often require (or are desired) the use of styling products - gels, mousse, serums, sprays or spritzs.  Repeated use can damage hair and make it lose the very body and styling appeal we're looking for.  It's a good idea to periodically give your hair a break - especially if color or chemically treated.  Short styles are notorious for becoming coarse - especially if you color enhance to cover-up graying.  Again, the best advice is to give your locks a break, avoid styling products, and be careful with appliances.  Using a coloring shampoo will extend the life of coloring while infusing moisture and reducing color treatments.

Sonme styling tips:
  • Avoid heavy conditioners.  They weigh down the hair and often work against the style to are trying to create.
  • Color enhancing shampoos, though not a replacement for coloring treatments, extend color and reduce treatments that are necessary...thus "extending" and protecting the life of your hair.
  • As with long hair, avoid styling while your hair is wet.  Hot appliances can quickly (oh so quickly) permanently damage the hair - and it takes a while to grow back.  Dry your hair on the coolest settings reasonable and comb through with a large tooth comb to avoid breaking and tearing.
  • Avoid alcohol-based styling products.  Many sprays and gels contain alcohol which can damage the follicle and reduce the shafts health.
