Choosing Your Hair Style!
5 top questions to ask yourself before you get a cut or style...

1) Do the hair styles suit your lifestyle? If you work, be sure it is appropriate for the office. Arrive at the salon in work clothes. Your stylist will get a better idea of what you are trying to achieve.
2) Is the style right for your facial shape? Consult your stylist to which styles would look best to suit your face.
3) Is the style right for your hair type? Thin hair = shorter styles Thicker hair = short to long styles Again, consult with your designer to which style best suits your hair type
4) Is the style appropriate for your age? Come on you've seen it ... A 30-40 year old trying out a style their daughter probably looks great in. As you age shorter hair generally is more fashionable.
5) Will you be able to style your hair at home, maintain the look, and/or do you have the time? 2008 is the short hair year. Take advantage of it. Shorter styles generally take less work to maintain. You need to find a balance of style and what you can actually do every morning. If you want a harder to maintain style, be sure you have the tools. After you get your style, alway ask your stylist STEP by STEP how they did it, what they used, etc.
I have a heart shaped face. What tips do you have for me?
Decrease volume in the crown and at the side, ear areas. Adding curl and fullness to the chin area can help round out the look. Wisps on the jaw area or bangs can help give a wider rounder appearance. Avoid styles that mirror the heart shape.
I have a diamond shaped face. What tips do you have for me?
Decrease volume in the crown and at the side, ear areas. Adding curl and fullness to the chin area and just above the temples can help round out the look. Avoid styles that mirror the diamond shape.
I have a round face. What tips do you have for me?
Decrease the volume at the sides and ear area. Increase height and length should be beyond the chin or just above it. A side part works well. Keeping hair off the face at the cheek area is also recommended.
I have a square shaped face. What tips do you have for me?
Styles that round out your hair can decrease the appearance of a square face shape. Adding curl, angled or wispy bangs, and a few wisps on the cheek area will all help. A cut that allows for some height is also a good idea. Wear a side part as opposed to a center part. Avoid straight bangs and hanging hair.
How can I tell what shape my face is?
Pull your hair back off your face and tie it in a pony tail if possible or if it is short slick it back with water. Look straight in the mirror and trace the shape with a bar of soap or a crayon. Make sure to only trace your face following the hairline around your temples and forehead. This will give you a shape to compare to the following weeks tips. Oval, Round, Square, Diamond, or Heart.
Tricks Of The Trade
Shampoo only every other day - since detergent inflates the hair shaft and roughs up cuticles.
On alternative days, rinse hair and condition only the ends. To clean hair without fluffing frizz-prone ends, New York hairstylist River Lloyd recommends applying shampoo only at the crown.
After blowing hair straight, switch the dryer to a cool setting for a few seconds, and blow each section again. And, use the best hair products!
